Wood Roofing FAQ's

|
Is the use of wood roofing products bad for the environment?
Trees are a renewable resource and an environmentally sound choice. Most alternative roofing products are made from petroleum based substances and ores that are not renewable, use a considerable amount of energy in their manufacture and generate pollutants, and cannot be recycled and/or reused. When burned, these products often produce toxic gases. The timber used to manufacture wood roofing is harvested from responsibly managed timber stands, is non-toxic, energy efficient to produce, and eminently recyclable and biodegradable. Wood roofing is a very natural, green building product - THE ORIGINAL ROOFING PRODUCT.

Are wood roofing products energy efficient?
Yes!! Wood roofing products have a high insulation value, vent heat well in the hot summer months, and lower energy costs for heating and cooling your home.
How do wood roofing products hold up to hail?
Wood roofing products are subjected to the same testing procedures as all other roofing products in the marketplace and compare very favorably in impact resistance ratings. Because wood has a natural amount of "give", it is less likely to crack than more brittle roofing products. Unlike many competitive roofing products that have replacement color lot issues, the beauty of wood roofing is that sections can be repaired rather than having to tear off the entire roof, saving time and money.
How do wood roofing products hold up in high winds?
Wood roofing products hold up to high winds extremely well. Because each piece is individually applied with spaces between, high winds are unlikely to lift off an entire roof or sections of a roof like an inverted umbrella. Wood roofing products have survived 130 mph hurricane-force winds. Individual shingles lost due to wind are easily replaced without destroying the integrity of the rest of the roof - again saving time and money.
What about fire and wood roofing?
In order to obtain a Class A, B, or C fire retardant rating, wood roofing products undergo the same testing procedures as other roofing products in the marketplace and must pass the same standards in order to be certified. Fire retardant wood roofing will protect your home from flying embers and will not spread flying embers. Communities across the region and nation differ in their requirements for fire retardancy. Check with your local building official for specific area requirements.
How long will the pressure treated fire retardant last?
The fire retardant lasts for the life of the roof. Tests conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest products laboratory, independent testing laboratories, and manufacturers prove that the treatment permeates the wood through and through, does not leach out over time, and renders the wood roofing fire retardant for the life of the roof. As building codes and requirements regarding fire retardancy may vary by locale it is best to check with local the local building officials for specific area requirements.
