 Wood roofing product descriptions

#1 perfection shingles

THE premium grade of western red cedar shingles for roofs and sidewalls. These top-grade shingles, specially selected by us from only the best mills, are 100% heartwood, 100% clear and 100% edge grain, meaning they are without defect and are blemish free. Thinner than a shake, wood shingles are cut tapered and smooth sawn on both faces for a very neat, tailored appearance. Available at 18" in length. On a 4/12 and steeper pitched roof, #1, 18" shingles are applied at a 5 1/2" exposure.

#2 perfection shingles

A good grade for many applications, #2 perfections are cut in the same length and thickness as a #1 perfection, but limited defects and blemishes are allowed. For example, on a #2 18" perfection, 11" of the face (the exposed portion plus some) must be free from defect. Above the 11" , limited knots are permitted. Flatgrain and sapwood are allowed. On a 4/12 or steeper pitched roof, #2, 18" shingles are applied at a 4 1/2" exposure.

#3 perfection shingles

These are considered to be utility grade shingles for economy applications and secondary buildings such as gazebos, outbuildings, etc. May also be used as undercoursing in a two course application. The face must be clear above 6" on a #3, 18 inch perfection Ð above the clear portion limited knots are allowed, as is sapwood and flatgrain. #3 perfections are cut in the same length and thickness as #1 and #2 perfections. On a 4 1/2" pitched or steeper roof, #3, 18" shingles are applied at a 4" exposure.

Medium shakes

Shakes are used when a more rustic, highly textured look is desired. Medium shakes are thicker than shingles (1/2 inch at the butt) and unlike wood shingles, are sawn smooth on one side only. The exposed face of the shake is hand split, which results in the interesting and characteristic look shakes are known for. Because of the thickness, shakes are a very durable and long lived natural roofing product. We buy only the best of the best Medium shakes from mills in Canada and the Pacific Northwest, handmade by skilled craftsmen in communities dedicated to producing quality natural wood roofing. Medium shakes are available at 24" in length, and may be made from either Premium Grade with no defects and 100% edge grain, or Number 1 Grade, which allows up to 20% flat grain per bundle. On a 4/12 or steeper pitched roof, 24" shakes are applied at a 10" exposure.

Heavy shakes

Made in the same way as medium shakes (sawn on one side, hand split on the exposed face) but much thicker and heavier than any other shake, giving the roof the ultimate rugged or rustic appearance. Heavy shakes are extremely durable and represent the ultimate in wood roofing products. Heavy shakes are 3/4" thick at the butt, cut from either Premium Grade with no defects and 100% edge grain, or Number 1 Grade, which allows up to 20% flat grain per bundle. As with medium shakes, heavy shakes are available at 24" in length and on a 4/12 or steeper pitched roof, applied at a 10" exposure.

Tapersawn shakes

Tapersawn shakes are made similar to shingles in that both sides are sawn to create smooth faces, but tapersawns are cut thicker. This shake has a naturally tailored look of a shingle but is complimented by the sharp shadow line of a shake caused by the thicker butt, which is 5/8" or 3/4" thick. The tapersawn shake is the most popular wood roof in the West Coast of British Columbia and elsewhere in Canada and the US. Cut from either premium Grade or Number 1 grade and available at 18" in length. On a 4/12 or steeper pitched roof, tapersawn shakes are applied at a 7 1/2" exposure.

Fire Retardant Treated Perfection Shingles, Shakes, and Tapersawn Shakes

Fire retardant cedar shakes and shingles can be used as an affordable and convenient alternative in many areas where the building code requires flame-resistant materials to be used.

Fire Retardant roof coverings are wood roofing products that have been pressure treated with a solution in a rigidly controlled manufacturing process that renders them, for the life of the roof, not readily flammable, giving a measurable degree of fire protection against light fire exposure to the roof deck. Fire Retardant shingles, shakes, and tapersawn shakes are resistant to burning embers that may land on the deck and also generate no flying embers. Only #1 shingles and shakes are available with Fire Retardant protection.
