TimberSIL® Glass Wood Products
Architects, Builders and Lumber Dealers FAQ's

Builders FAQs

Do TimberSIL® Glass Wood Products meet AWPA standards?

The AWPA standards do not apply to TimberSIL® Glass Wood. The AWPA writes standards for wood treated with preservatives, most of which are hazardous and regulated by the EPA. These standards apply to toxic products being infused into wood and that leach or leave the wood over time. TimberSIL® Glass Wood uses none of these types of chemicals and it does not leach and/or lose its protection over time. Its protection is locked in for life. Therefore, the AWPA cannot be applied or be used in regard to TimberSIL® Glass Wood.

Do TimberSIL® Glass Wood Products have ICC approval?

ICC approval is required when the manufacturing process changes the properties of the wood itself by more than 10%, resulting in a deviation from UBC standards, which is not the case for TimberSIL® Glass Wood. Specifically, according to the USDA (US Department of Agriculture) rules..."Materials that reduce properties of wood by 10% or less carry the inspections and certifications of the wood itself". TimberSIL® Glass Wood therefore requires no ICC approval and is certified and inspected by SPIB, TPI, and WWP, and carries one or more of these stamps of approval on each piece of wood.

Does TimberSIL® Glass Wood require any local or state building code and/or agency approvals?

Because TimberSIL® Glass Wood is a non-toxic, natural wood product no unusual approvals are required for most common uses. When in doubt, please contact your local officials. When used in an application which specifically requires a Class A fire rating, which TimberSIL® Glass Wood has, or a barrier free certification it is best to first confirm acceptance with local officials. We will furnish you with any documentation that may be required. Additionally, we continue to meet with these officials across the country to introduce them to TimberSIL® Glass Wood.

What is the weight of TimberSIL® Glass Wood compared to ACQ or CA?

TimberSIL® Glass Wood can be as much as 35% lighter than non-dried ACQ or CA.

What sizes of TimberSIL® Glass Wood are available at this time?

TimberSIL® manufactures over 200 different products, including decking materials, siding, structural framing, piers, marinas, boardwalks and fencing. Virtually any southern yellow pine product can be produced upon request. We anticipate other wood species products will be introduced in the future.

Is there any corrosion on fasteners, hangers, or screws?

No. Corrosion tests show no deterioration or corrosion of fasteners. You do not need to use stainless steel or triple galvanized products. Simply use everyday exterior grade fasteners and connectors.

Is TimberSIL® Glass Wood certified for Green Building Programs?

Yes, TimberSil® Glass Wood Products are Cradle2Cradle Certified Silver by MBDC. The LEED certification program of the US Green Building Council provides LEED points for Cradle2Cradle certification, one of several ways TimberSIL® Glass Wood Products qualify for LEED credits.
We will provide additional information regarding TimberSIL® Glass Wood and how it qualifies for LEEDS certification upon request.
